ABOUT THE
KHAITAN SCHOOL

The Khaitan family finds its roots in Ramgarh village of Rajasthan. Our forefathers were the first ones from a Marwari community to have completed Matriculation in the 1800s. Our founders Shri Kali Prasad Khaitan was not only the first Marwari Barrister but also the Advocate General of West Bengal and Shri Devi Prasad Khaitan was a member of the drafting Committee of the Constitution of India headed by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

The Khaitan School, established in 1995, with over 3600 students, 200 plus staff members and a huge alumni network of 1400 plus members; continues to uphold our founders’ vision to provide holistic education to our students.

Belonging to the Marwari community, the Khaitan family originated from the village of Ramgarh in Rajasthan. We have always been inspired and invigorated by education and academics, setting milestones and benchmarks for our people. In fact, in the late 1800, my grandfather was the first individual from our community to pass the Matriculation examination- and half a century later, my sister was the first woman in our community to achieve the same distinction.

I am proud to mention that four out of six of my father’s brothers attained first Class, first in the M.A. Examination. Also, an uncle of mine was the first Marwari to qualify as a Barrister and moved on to being the Advocate General of West Bengal.Coming back to my generation, numerous family members have obtained laurels in academics, ranging from lawyers to industrialists.

These glorious backgrounds of highly educated and motivated family members rooted the very foundation of education deep within me.

My wife, Srimati Draupati Devi, had always wanted to impart education to children since she strongly believe that-

It was the right of every child, boy or girl, to enjoy quality education that would enable them to achieve their goals and fulfill their dreams.

It was her vision that saw the birth of our first school, the B.D. Memorial Institute, which was founded in Kolkata (1964) with  only three students. Today, the school boasts of over 5,500 students. Thereafter, my wife and I had the privilege of building many more schools in various parts of the country.

I would like to share that being in close proximity to political stalwarts such as Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Morarji Desai, Jagjeevan Ram and many others, I had the privilege of interacting with them and learnt many crucial aspects of life which I have tried to imbibe over the years. Undoubtedly, Gandhiji has been the greatest influence in my life, especially his ideals and principles on Truth and Non-violence. His other important belief that I have tried to imbibe is to ‘never leave any work pending.’I had the honor of traveling with Mahatma Gandhi  in my car on 15 August, 1947 on the day of India’s independence. These great visionaries were immensely sincere and hard working and made unbelievable self sacrifices for the freedom of our country.

On one occasion, I had an appointment with Pandit Nehru in New Delhi and the meeting was scheduled a day after the death  of his son-in-law, Mr. Feroze Gandhi. I wondered whether I should report for the meeting and called his office to confirm the same . To my amazement, Panditji’s secretary informed me that Nehruji was already waiting for me in his office.

I understood the true essence of sincerity, honesty, hard work and sacrifice from this incredible experience.
