Class IX Students Visit National Science Centre for an Educational Experience in Biotechnology

 

 

 

On 27 August 2024, 40 enthusiastic students from Class IX embarked on an educational trip to the Biotech Lab at the National Science Centre, New Delhi. The visit was designed to deepen their understanding of biotechnology and cell biology through hands-on experiences and exposure to cutting-edge scientific tools and concepts. The trip provided an exciting opportunity for students to bridge their classroom learning with real-world applications in a highly engaging and interactive setting.

Activities at the Biotech Lab

 

1. Slide Preparation of Cheek Cells:
Under the supervision of experts, the students learned the delicate process of preparing slides from human cheek cells. They practiced the techniques of cell sampling, staining, and slide preparation, which allowed them to observe the structure of cheek cells under the microscope. This activity introduced them to the world of microscopy, giving them a first-hand view of the microscopic life within their own bodies.

2. Observation of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells:
Students were guided through the observation of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, using high-resolution microscopes. They explored the differences in cell structure, particularly the presence or absence of a nucleus and other cellular organelles, deepening their knowledge of basic cell biology. This comparative study gave them insights into the fundamental building blocks of life, sparking curiosity about cellular processes.

 

3. Exploration of Biotechnology Devices:
The students were introduced to various advanced devices used in biotechnology, gaining insights into their applications in both research and industry. From PCR machines to DNA analyzers, the students learned how biotechnology is making significant contributions to fields such as medicine, agriculture, and environmental science. This exposure to cutting-edge technology broadened their understanding of how science is applied in the real world.

Visit to the Science Centre Galleries

Following their activities in the Biotech Lab, the students explored the galleries of the National Science Centre. These galleries featured a diverse range of scientific topics, from physics and chemistry to biology and space exploration. The interactive exhibits and displays allowed the students to engage with models and experiments that deepened their understanding of scientific principles and how they relate to everyday life. Highlights included demonstrations on physics fundamentals, space exploration models, and environmental science exhibits.

The trip to the National Science Centre was an immensely enriching experience for the Class IX students. It not only reinforced their understanding of biotechnology and cell biology but also ignited a passion for science and technology. The teachers-in-charge, Ms. Madhusmita Purohit and Ms. Shoba Gupta, commended the students for their enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the visit, making the trip a resounding success.
